Artist's Comments

"I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think.... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him."

- New York Times writer David Halberstam, on the self immolation of Thích Quảng Đức on June 11 1963.

Credit where credit is due. Hopefully it doesn't seem like I'm trivialising this event in any way - thats certainly not my intent. I ended up putting both the swastika and the aum on the image because I wasn't sure which would be more appropriate. A typical design decision from me.
His heart was the only thing to survive both his immolation and cremation, hence the seemingly unrelated title. Its now considered a holy artifact. Cool huh?

wow... theres a lot captured in this one image..

it was interesting that you included the swastika.. considering how the two variations on it mean so much in different contexts - the buddhist use and the nazi use....

very well done

I thought the swastika was too relevant to Buddhism to leave out. That and I'm sure the DevART community is beyond immediately thinking swastika = nazi :D

Thanks for the comment!

I thought it was Hinduism that was related to the Swastika. I know the Aum (or Om) is the holy sound for Hinduism.

They're relevant to both Buddhism and Hinduism. Buddhism was founded by a Hindu prince so it inherited the Swastika. The Om is part of mantra "Om mani padme hum" in Buddhism.

I tried leaving a comment before, but dA was on read only and wouldn't let me.

What I said was that it is a beautiful image and I love the tribute you did. It would make an awesome poster and I think it really captures the feeling of what you're trying to represent. I was just curious as to where you'd read the article and what were the circumstances that got you to do this image other than the article itself?

This guy comes up to me "Hey, I need ten bucks." I'm all "The hell is your problem? You see this sketchbook? See this? I spent my food money for the next week on this! It was three dollars!" *vicas-fawx

Never read the article - I got the quote off Wikipedia. No particular circumstances. I've got the RATM CD with the photo on the cover but I only looked at it after I started drawing the picture.
